Cobras Conquer the Course – Tuesday, 15th July
Captain Keith Reilly was proud to welcome 16 members of the 2025 Society of Liverpool Golf Captains—the Cobras—to Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club for a spirited day of competition and camaraderie.
Following a stretch of record-breaking sunshine and high temperatures, the weather shifted dramatically, offering the Cobras a cooler, wetter challenge—and a rare opportunity to test their waterproofs and umbrellas!
The day began with hearty bacon barms and coffee, fuelling the Cobras for an individual Stableford competition, featuring:
Nearest the Pin on Hole 15 and Nearest the Pin in Two on Hole 18. This was designed to reduce the 'chance' of Paul Robley winning a longest drive competition which backfired as the absence of this did not stop him increasing his stock of red wine. But more on that later........
The rain was relentless until later in the round when the sun came out and the course quickly dried. This was amazing on its own given the amount of rain that had fallen during the earlier part of the day. Despite the rain and wind, every competitor brought determination and good humour to the course. After the final putt, everyone gathered to enjoy warm hospitality from the bar and well-earned food from the clubhouse kitchen.
The pairings were as follows:
Group 1: Martyn Croft, Dave Pennington & Paul Robley (no pictures of this anti social group!)
Group 2: Ronnie Turner, Alan Acheson & Ronan McGrath (all looking very wet!)
Group 3: Dave Gregson, John Jones & Simon Harwood
Group 4: Dave Blake, Joey Cain, Vic Guney & Mike Robertson
Group 5: Ken Gibson, David Hest, Keith Reilly & Ronnie Samuel
Results:
1st Place: Mike Robertson with a magnificent 38 points
2nd Place: David Hest – 34 points
Nearest the Pin on 15: Vic Guney
Nearest the Pin in Two on 18: Paul Robley
Yet again, Paul's wine rack was duly topped up; can anyone stop him??
The Captain would like to thank the 16 soaked members of the 2025 Society of Liverpool Golf Captains and hope that you enjoyed the day!
