On the 12th September, 12 Cobras gathered at Leasowe Golf Club for the next Cobra Tour Event.
Unusually there was only a gentle 17 mph breeze and clear skies which seem to have blessed most events this summer. I suspect there was a huge sigh of relief from those that played the Mockbeggar earlier in the summer when 50 mph winds were in play!
As a working Captain I hadn’t been able to attend any of the earlier events so this was my first chance to mix with and entertain the Cobras which was long overdue but very rewarding and enjoyable for me on a personal level.
The format was a Texas Scramble with a longest drive on 17 and a nearest the flag on 18.
The Teams were as below with Dave Gregson unfortunately down on the tee sheet as Dave ‘Larry’ Grayson. God bless predictive text but to be fair, there are a number of similarities!
The pairings were as follows:
Group 1: Paul Whyte, Ken Gibson and Mike Robertson
Group 2: Ronan McGrath, Martyn Croft and Ronnie Samuel
Group 3: Dave Gregson, Ronnie Turner and Vic Guney
Group 4: John Jones, Alan Acheson and Tristram Lesser
Everyone that attended was given a white Leasowe golf cap adorned with a Cobra logo , there are still 10 of these available from Paul Whyte if anyone would like one!
The first group teed of at 1.30pm and after 4 hours everyone was back in the clubhouse.
The results were:
Longest Drive 17th:
As Paul Robley was not in attendance, there was an opportunity for someone else to take the spoils . Rather selfishly, I took home advantage, launched a good one and kept the name Paul synonymous with length!!
Nearest the Pin 18th:
Accuracy is not a forte of me so I was surprised and a little ashamed and embarrassed to win that as well despite a great effort from Dave Gregson to save his blushes!
Texas Scramble Winning Team:
If the previous two were not enough, the winning team comprised Mike Robertson, Ken Gibson and myself, the Wirral golfers taking the prize!
Wooden Spoon:
It was incredibly close with only 4 points separating all the teams but somebody has to take the shame. I have decided to protect the losers anonymity but in the years to come if you find this wooden spoon in your cutlery draw then you were in that team!!
The afternoon was finished off with some bangers & mash and drinks in the clubhouse.
As part of the day £60 was donated to the Captain's charity, Kidney Research UK which was a lovely gesture by the Cobras.
