Wigan entertains...... Thursday 14th August
14 Captains planned to attend the Wigan Cobra Day on 14th August, unfortunately Hesketh Captain Joey Cain had to give apologies on the day, due to a work related issue earlier that morning and was unable to make it. Joey was missed that much by the Cobras that we had to send him a picture of the dessert saying - Joey, look what you could have won š¤£
The weather was a very pleasant 23C with no rain and only light winds yet again excellent golfing conditions.
Breakfast was served downstairs in the lounge area. Dave Gregson the host Captain explaining the history of the site dating back to the 12 century, its ghosts and also pointing out the name of LB Todd a Kiwi on the winners boards, famous for having the Rugby League Challenge Cup man of the match Trophy named after him - the Lance Todd Trophy.
Dave Gregson welcomed everyone to Wigan & explained the competition rules and prizes and gave out presents to each attendee.
The competition was a Singles Stableford off the yellow tees, with a nearest the pin on 8 and longest drive on 16 ( what no Paul Robley! š¤£). The groups were:
Group 1: Martyn Green, Dave Gregson & Paul McManus
Group 2: Vic Guney, John Jones & Dave Blake
Group 3: Mike Robertson, Martyn Croft & Ronnie Turner (Ronnie Samuel also joined this group after the 4th)
Group 4: Ken Gibson, Alan Acheson & Keith Reilly
Whilst there is no half way house at Wigan, Andrea the Captainās good lady, drove out to the 10th tee in a buggy, bringing warm Wigan pies and ice cold beers for the Captains at the turn. This was very much appreciated - the pies in particular were everything the Captain had said they would be!Ā
A few pictures from the course:
Needless to say, John Jones had something to say about his ball in the last picture!!
Following the competition, drinks were served on the lawn prior to the evening meal.
In a vain attempt to pip the Chinook display experienced at Hillside, at 5pm prompt the local Red Baron commenced his aerobatics display over the clubhouse.
We had a lovely evening meal in the upstairs dining room followed by the competition results:
1st with 37 Points (20 back 9) was John Jones (now the bride and not the bridesmaid!)
2nd with 37 Points (19 back 9) was Dave Gregson (nothing to do with local knowledge of course!)
Winners of the blind pairs draw with 67 points were Martyn Croft and Paul McManus.
Longest Drive and Nearest the pin both went to Alan Acheson. What no picture?
Interestingly to some - all three left handed Cobras made the prizes at Wigan!
Ā£70 was donated to the Captain and Lady Captainās charity the Alzheimerās Society.
The Captain thanked everyone for attending and wished them a safe journey home.Ā
